21st Century Integrated Curriculum

As the world around us is changing rapidly, there is a great need for us to change the way we teach. Modern infrastructure and newer technologies, along with the ever-evolving demands of the world around us, are shifting the focus from only reading and writing to the development of skills. To prepare our children for life, along with providing knowledge, we have to provide them opportunities to develop skills such as communication, decision making, ethics, independent thinking, teamwork, leadership, creativity, research and problem solving. But how do we achieve all of this, if the world around us is dynamic and always in a flux Will the standardised curriculums, with little or no flexibility, suit the diversified needs of the learners?

The Integrated Curriculum followed at Doon International School is a well structured, carefully planned, accountable and appropriate curriculum that incorporates the best pedagogic practices keeping in mind learners multiple intelligences and learning styles. This curriculum is based on the belief that the Child is the Curriculum and has been designed after much research and development. It is built not on the idea of separate subjects, but on the much more fertile idea of disciplines, which makes possible a fluid and dynamic curriculum that is interdisciplinary. This helps us create a positive learning environment and the result is happy, empowered, well adjusted and competent learners who possess the skills to move and make their own world.

Ours is a thematic, integrated and developmentally appropriate learning programme that provides experiential learning and ensures the learners holistic development through a multi-sensory approach, transporting them to a higher level of thinking. We focus on the development of basic skills and higher level thinking, encourage lifelong learning, structure learning around themes, big ideas and meaningful concepts, and provide connections among various curricular disciplines, along with providing learners opportunities to apply skills they have learned. Our curriculum encourages active participation in relevant real-life experiences. The books and activities captivate, motivate, challenge and scaffold learners along with providing them a deeper understanding of content.

We never forget that there are other equally important factors in the successful education of our young learners - the educators and parents. If we are to achieve the goals set in the curriculum, we must ensure that the teaching learning process in the classrooms is efficient and strong. The educators are given not just an effective curriculum, but are also constantly empowered to imbibe and deliver the curriculum to the learners. Through various educator training programmes and workshops, we arm them with transactional tools and procedural guidelines that help in discovering new and improved ways to deliver learning sessions to innocent minds. Parenting workshops too are conducted for the parents to orient them about the latest parenting techniques along with guiding them about how they can participate in their childrens holistic education. At Doon International School, we believe that each child is a miracle, and that there hasnt been and never will be another like him. All we have to do is nurture the creative and curious spirit of the children

Personality Development

A leader is not one who speaks from a platform, but someone who carves out signatures in people's hearts. This becomes possible only when the right education is imparted through the right infrastructure in the right manner. DIS organizes leadership training programs and Mentor programs. These help to create confidence, commitment, effective communication skills and empathy amongst children and they become ready to answer their call for duty even during extreme circumstances

Students grow in various directions; their interests are kindled by various stimuli; their awareness expands in direct proportion to multi dimensional exposures directed at them. Recognising this, inter-house & interschool debates, quizzes, competitions, talks by eminent persons, exhibitions are all organized to build an interest and awareness in what is happening in the world and equip them with the required confidence and ability.

To help children understand and appreciate the diversity of our cultural fabric, a series of events and festivals are celebrated in the school campus. Our ultra modern auditorium and its facilities help foster performing abilities of our children in creating and executing brilliant stage shows and dramas.

Games & Sports

In order to keep the children fit in mind and body, sports form an integral part of the school calendar and each child is required to participate in one or more games andor sports, specially in those in which he she excels.

The school has arrangements for regular sports practice and specializes in all popular sports such as badminton, cricket, hockey, football, table tennis, athletics, basketball, skating, swimming and rifle shooting etc. The school also provides facilities for yoga and training in body building, martial arts such as judo karate taekwondo by trained coaches.

Regular matches are conducted among the four houses and with teams from other schools to develop enthusiasm for sports and spirit of healthy competition. Students participate regularly in inter-school, inter zone and inter-state tournaments which helps them stay focused and disciplined to achieve results in competitive environment. Our philosophy of we shall be there with you till you become champions, gives them courage and the will to become true champions.

Educational Tours & Outings

The school considers educational tours, treks and outings as an integral part of a childs complete education.

It is deemed desirable that all children participate in tours, treks and outings organized at the school level once a year in order to inculcate in them sensitivity to the environment, geographical diversity and ways of living of people of various regions, and familiarizes them to their ancient and modern culture and civilization.

The school tours not only open the nascent minds to the wider world but also help expose them to different and diverse ways of life, thus developing in them a broad outlook. In addition to the one long mid term excursion, the school regularly organises weekend outings, picnics and day trips for the school students.
